Field Trips (Educational)

Following are guidelines for non-school groups of 14 or more pedestrians (i.e., Newcomers Club, scouts, garden clubs, area church groups, etc.):

Groups will honor guidelines in this section and all other guidelines and rules of etiquette in the Visitors Guide, as well as those in the Hitchcock Woods Foundation’s brochures and maps.

Follow instructions on all “yield” signage as described in this document.

Groups wishing to make a field trip to the Hitchcock Woods will register with the Hitchcock Woods Foundation office one week prior to the date of the trip.

An application and a copy of the general guidelines for pedestrians will be sent from the Hitchcock Woods Foundation to the registering organization for signature. This should be returned in advance of the visit.

Information required from groups registering will include:

  1. Purpose of the trip
  2. Number of people attending
  3. Approximate length of time to be spent in the Woods
  4. Entrance from which the group will plan to enter and exit the Woods
  5. Contact’s name, signature, phone number, organization’s name if applicable.

The Hitchcock Woods Foundation requests a donation from groups other than public school groups to support the Hitchcock Woods Foundation.

Following are guidelines for School Groups:

An annual letter will be sent in the fall to the Aiken County School District office for circulation to all area public schools stating that field trips are welcome, but that one week’s advanced registration with the Hitchcock Woods Foundation is required. A similar letter will be sent in the fall to all local private school principals.

An application and a copy of the general guidelines for pedestrians will be sent from the Hitchcock Woods Foundation to the registering school group for signature. This should be returned in advance of the visit.

The Hitchcock Woods Foundation will require the following information of all school groups registering:

  1. Purpose of the trip
  2. Number of students attending
  3. Number of adult chaperones attending
  4. Approximate length of time to be spent in the Woods

Docents

It is suggested that either a representative from the Hitchcock Woods Foundation or a trained docent meet and greet all groups that register for a first time visit to the Woods prior to the start of their field trip. The purpose would be to inform the group of the basic guidelines for safety and protection of the flora and fauna in the Woods.

If a guided tour is required, a donation to the Hitchcock Woods Foundation will be requested.
